About Oamaru Oamaru-1

The foresight of the City Fathers in retaining many of the old Victorian whitestone buildings of Oamaru has also retained much of the old world atmosphere of a by-gone age. Such a unique setting gives the town an unrivalled tranquillity and it has become a sought after location for film sets as well as a relaxing holiday venue.

Tranquillity need not be dull. The district holds a variety of events throughout the year, with locals dressing in period costume, the ladies in long skirts and bustles, the gentlement in frock coats and top hats, a number riding penny-farthing cycles.

Also, Oamaru harbour nurtures a robust colony of penguins - delightful, fascinating birds of character and humorous foibles. The local community has actively fostered their care and has also provided viewing facilities so that they may be seen in their natural environment, returning to the shore in groups in the evening after a day feeding at sea.

The Waitaki region provides further avenues of investigation with Heritage trails through the countryside winding from the ocean to the Alps.

Few regions offer so much variety in such an easily accessible area - small town life, out-door pursuits and exploration, historical sites and buildings, friendly locals and a choice of indolent leisure or active pursuit of items of interest found nowhere else.
